Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior

The Department of Health Promotion,
Education, and Behavior at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of
Public Health invites applications for several open tenure-track faculty
positions for scholars interested in applying the behavioral and social sciences
to the improvement of public health. We are particularly interested in
candidates with experience and expertise in nutrition, Latino health disparities
and inequalities, global health, social policy, or organizational behavior. The
position in Latino health disparities is part of a cluster, with a companion
position to be filled in the Department of Anthropology.
We encourage applications for
candidates at the assistant professor level. Successful candidates will have
demonstrated evidence of, or clear potential for, scholarly research, successful
grant writing, and teaching excellence. He/she will be expected to pursue
external funding for his/her program of research and to collaborate with
existing research programs within the department and school. Qualifications
include an earned doctorate in nutrition, health promotion, social policy,
organizational behavior, or related behavioral/social science discipline with a
focus in public health. Skills in program planning and evaluation, community and
individual behavior change, sociopolitical processes, organizational and systems
change, or structural interventions to promote health are desired, as is
experience working in communities in the US and other countries.
This recruitment is part of
unprecedented growth at USC, with over 250 new faculty positions being created
across the University, and development of a new research campus. The school
opened a new 104,860-square-foot state-of-the-art building for research and
instruction in Spring 2006. The department is interdisciplinary, collaborative,
energetic, and forward-looking.

Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities (posted

The University of South Carolina invites applications to
fill three tenure-track faculty positions to build our program of
interdisciplinary research in child obesity and related conditions affecting
children and their families. This open rank recruitment is part of USC's
Faculty Excellence Initiative to expand campus-wide areas of excellence. The
primary appointments for these positions will be in the Arnold School of
Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Department
of Exercise Science, and in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of
Psychology. Adjunct or joint appointments are possible, and affiliation with
the Center for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities, the Research
Consortium on Children and Families (RCCF), and/or Prevention Research
Center is desirable. Relevant areas of obesity research may include: the
impact of family systems including parenting styles and family functioning
in underserved youth; etiologic, metabolic, genetic, and cultural aspects of
obesity and associated health conditions in children and adolescents; the
influence of psychosocial, family, community, environment or policy factors
on physical activity or nutrition as relates to children; and/or development
and delivery of appropriate interventions.
Successful applicants are expected to lead their own
research program and demonstrate potential to acquire external grant
funding. Formal and non-formal teaching in the applicant’s general area of
expertise and consistent with the departmental needs is expected. Review of
applications will begin by November 1, 2006, and will continue until hiring
is complete. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Cancer Epidemiology Faculty

The University of South Carolina (www.sc.edu)
is seeking applicants for a research faculty position in Cancer /
Environmental Epidemiology, with rank dependent on candidate’s record and
experience. The candidate is expected to collaborate with other investigators
in the South Carolina Statewide Cancer Prevention and Control Program and the
South Carolina Cancer Center, an affiliation between the University of South
Carolina and Palmetto Health, the largest provider of health care in the
Midlands Region of South Carolina. Excellent opportunities also exist for
collaborative research with the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control (which encompasses the South Carolina Central Cancer
Registry), the Medical University of South Carolina (in Charleston), the WJB
Dorn VAMC, and the NCI-funded South Carolina Cancer Disparities Community
Network, the major home for cancer-related community-based participatory
research in South Carolina. Applicants should have doctoral training in
epidemiology or environmental health sciences, specific training and expertise
in the design and execution of epidemiologic studies, and an interest in
broader implications of their research (e.g., racial cancer rate disparities
which are especially prominent in South Carolina). Highly competitive start-up
