Biographical Information:
Carol B.Cornman, BS, RN, PA, is the director of the Office for the Study of Aging. She received her bachelor’s degree in health science from Thomas A. Edison State College in New Jersey. At Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA, she obtained her training as an RN and a Physician Assistant. She has been involved with the South Carolina Alzheimer’s Disease Registry since it was established in 1988 for the purpose of collecting data and reporting annual prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders to public and private agencies for planning purposes. Other activities include the coordination of the development and implementation of training programs for professionals and direct staff in dementia and an exercise program for the frail elderly. She provides technical assistance and consultation for program implementation and research associated with consumer direction and person-centered planning.

Biographical Information:
Marcia J. Lane, MPH, Associate Director, Office for the Study of Aging, provides program coordination and evaluation for activities related to nursing home quality initiatives, community- and home-based services for the elderly, conference evaluations, Placemat Strength Training Program evaluation, and consultation for measuring quality assurance. Her research interests include older women’s health issues, dementia, consumer-directed care, and quality of care for the elderly at home or in facilities.

Biographical Information:
Courtney Davis has a master’s degree in health administration from the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health. Courtney currently is a research associate at the Office for the Study of Aging. Her experience includes developing and conducting direct care workforce recruitment and retention training, consumer-directed care training, as well as designing training materials for long-term care staff. Courtney provides technical assistance with program development to long term care professionals and assists with and evaluation of program development. Her interests include direct care workforce recruitment and retention, consumer-directed care, disaster preparedness for vulnerable older adults, elder mistreatment, caregiver support, and quality improvement in community-based health services.

Biographical Information:
Dorothy Davis is the data manager for the Alzheimer's Disease Registry and other databases. She has worked with data at the University of South Carolina since 1986. She also assists with the evaluation of long-term care programs. Dorothy earned her BA from the University of Colorado. Her research interests include older people's health issues and physical activity.

Maggi Miller

Biographical Information:
Maggi C. Miller has MS in health promotion from the University of Delaware and a PhD in epidemiology from University of South Carolina University Arnold School of Public Health. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Office for the Study of Aging. Her primary responsibilities for the office involve research, grant writing, preparation and publication of scientific manuscripts, and evaluation of current research projects.  Her research interests include Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, social epidemiology, survey development, and qualitative data analysis.

Jan Merling has a master of arts degree from George Washington University in human growth and development and therapeutic recreation. Her experience includes 35 years in long-term care, substance abuse, and college teaching. Jan currently is the education coordinator for the Office for the Study of Aging at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina.

Biographical Information:
Maria Patton holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and a graduate certificate in gerontology from the University of South Carolina. She is currently the Director of the South Carolina Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Program (SCVAGAL). She has over 30 years experience working in state government in the area of long term care and served for 9 years as the Long Term Care Ombudsman in the Governor's Office. Maria is also a licensed bachelor's level social worker, state of South Carol certified public manager, qualified interpreter in Spanish and certified care manager, NACCM.

Biographical Information:
Candace N. Porter holds a master of statistics degree with a biomedical concentration from North Carolina State University. She is currently a statistical research associate at the Office for the Study of Aging. Her primary responsibilities for the office are focused on the South Carolina Alzheimer’s Disease Registry and its related projects. Her research interests include AIDS dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders as causes of death, survival analysis, and longitudinal data analysis.
