Between 1 and 2 million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone they depended on for care or protection. For every one case of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation reported to authorities, five more go unreported. Behind these statistics are people.
We Each Have a Story is a training that emphasizes the prevention of mistreatment by addressing what can be done before mistreatment occurs. The curriculum is designed to help direct care staff learn about risk factors for elder mistreatment, self-awareness, coping mechanisms, and strategies to prevent mistreatment.
The training is composed of two 45-minute sessions. Recommended participants include CNAs, staff involved in activities and social services, nurses and other facility care staff. Our extensive research supports this training program which assists facility staff through the following topics:
Unit 1: What’s Happening? Knowing the Problem
- Types of mistreatment
- Penalties for mistreatment
- Risk factors for mistreatment
Unit 2: Me, Myself, and Others: Working Together
- Raising self-awareness
- Coping with emotions and stress
- Building relationships
- Shared work values
- Cooperative work environment
The training package includes a CD-ROM which contains facilitator manuals, handouts, and PowerPoint presentations. Video clips for both the direct care staff training and management training are also provided and are excellent for promoting discussion.

"One component of our exam is on abuse, neglect, and legalities of healthcare. Students scored 78% or or higher in this area this semester. I think it was due, in part, to "We Each Have a Story" . . .
"The one item that stood out was how unaware students were of subtle mistreatment [before the training]. After the material was presented we began our clinical nurse aid training.
