Elder Mistreatment Prevention in Residential Facilities

OSA is developing an elder mistreatment prevention training module for South Carolina's nursing homes.  This initiative is a collaboration with the Center for Child and Family Studies in the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina.  The project was funded by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

The focus of the training is preventing mistreatment that stems from factors that can be addressed such as frustration, lack of knowledge, and stress as well as facility-oriented factors such as lack of necessary resources and understaffing. The basis for the elder mistreatment prevention training module is a thorough review of the literature and a needs assessment in which direct care staff, nurses, administrators, advocates, and other professionals were asked questions about elder mistreatment, common problems, and strategies for prevention.

The training is competency-based module, including a curriculum for in-service training of staff and a corresponding curriculum for the training of managers. Pilot testing of the curricula will be completed before implementation.
