Health Services Policy and Management
The mission of the Department of Health Services Policy and Management is to prepare individuals
for positions in health-services management, policy, research, and education. The department will
do this by providing students in the Masters in Health Administration, Masters in Public Health,
doctoral programs, and other degree programs with the highest quality graduate education, based on
excellence in teaching, research, and service. The department emphasizes service to South Carolina
while serving students from throughout the United States and other countries.
The curriculum content is multidisciplinary, incorporating studies in areas such as management of
integrated health systems, managed care, health planning, leadership, finance, management information
systems and associated technology, law, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, and health
economics. Contemporary issues are presented and discussed.
Effective leadership in the vast and complex health care industry is contingent upon a broad-based,
comprehensive education in health services management. It is the concern of the department to assist
in the development of talented, capable, creative, and ethical managers and policy-makers in every
possible way within the domain of professional education.
