PROJECT NAME: Physical Activity in Preschool Children
(Motor Development Supplement)
TIMELINE: 2003-2007
FUNDING SOURCE: National Institutes of Health/NICHD
PRINCIPAL
INVESTIGATOR:
Dr. Russell R. Pate
CO-INVESTIGATORS: Harriet Williams, Bill Brown, Cheryl Addy
PROJECT OVERVIEW/
ABSTRACT:
Prevalence of obesity is evident in children as young as 3-10 years; it has been hypothesized that physical activity in young children is heavily influenced by physical, social, environmental and developmental factors, but few studies have tested these hypotheses. The supplement study extends an investigation of ‘Physical Activity in Preschool Children’ which examined physical activity behaviors of children in the preschool setting using accelerometers and an observational system. This study examines motor skill development as a factor in level and type of physical activity participated in by young preschool children. Data from the supplement study, when combined with accelerator data, will provide insight into the nature of the relationship between level of motor skill development and level of participation in physical activity by young children in the preschool setting.
