Inaugural Student Bowl huge success
November 19, 2009
Winners of the inaugural EXSC Student Bowl
are Mike Stoudemire, Graham Jones,
and Keith Burns.
Congratulations to Keith Burns, Graham Jones, and Mike Stoudemire for winning the inaugural Exercise Science Student Bowl at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health. This team will represent USC in the Southeastern American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM) regional Student Bowl competition, February 2010 in Greenville, SC.
Regional Chapters of ACSM introduce undergraduate and graduate students to the field of professional sports medicine by facilitating attendance at regional conferences and gatherings for members.
Student competition bowls were initially developed by the Midwest Regional Chapter of ACSM and have been refined over the past several years. The challenging and often highly entertaining intercollegiate competition has spread to most ACSM chapters. The National Student Bowl has gained a sizeable following and provides a venue for competition among all regional teams at the Annual Meeting.
Not only does this friendly competition test the knowledge of Exercise Science students, it also “provides an opportunity for undergraduates who may not think about ACSM the ability to participate in the meeting,” commented bowl coordinator and Exercise Science instructor, Steve Barth.
On November 4th, the Department of Exercise Science hosted its first Student Bowl. According to Barth, USC’s first bowl was intended as a “social event for undergraduates and graduates as well as a celebration of department’s 20th anniversary.” The evening began with pizza and cake. Ten teams participated in the bowl challenge, formatted as a Jeopardy style game to test student’s knowledge in 6 exercise science-related categories (i.e., muscle physiology, cardiovascular, nutrition, EKG, history, and environment). The bowl was very successful, with attendance of more than 50 students.
Exercise Science faculty designed the questions based on classroom lectures and material gleaned from textbooks. The announcer was Dr. Matt Kostek, judges were Dr. Larry Durstine, EXSC Department Chair, Dr. Ray Thompson, and Dr. Raja Fayad.
The final “Jeopardy-style” question stumped everyone in the competition: “Name two factors that lead to lactic acid formation when exercising?” If you know the answer, perhaps you should consider participation in next year’s EXSC Student Bowl.
