USC students majoring in exercise science with an emphasis in motor development. All students are certified in CPR and First Aid and have had courses in human anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, and health fitness.
What kind of results do you see?
Weight loss or weight maintenance is typically seen during active participation in the program. However, if the new concepts and habits are not maintained at home, weight gain after completion of the program can and does occur. Family support is vital to achieving success in the program.
Over 75% of all participants who complete the program gain no weight during the program; yet they continue to grow taller. This is in effect a significant weight loss. The amount of weight loss is dependent upon the age of the participant, degree of adherence, length of time in the program, and family support.
Where are the sessions held?
All sessions are held in the USC Blatt PE Center located at 1300 Wheat Street in Columbia, SC. Call 803-576-6373 or 803-777-3050 for directions.
Is there a diet you recommend?
We do not encourage “dieting” for children. We strongly recommend following the My Plate guide, portion control, and cutting down on sweets.
Who has the best results with the program?
The participants with strong family involvement, who reinforce what is learned during the program and encourage each other to be physically active at home, have the best results.
Do you set a goal weight to obtain during the program?
Our program focuses on general wellness through learning behaviors, building skills, and gaining the confidence to live a healthy lifestyle every day. Although, we do monitor every participant’s weight, we do not set a “goal” weight.
