The faculty of the Division of Physical Therapy and Motor Control
includes individuals with a wide variety of teaching experience and
research expertise in physical therapy-related issues as well as in
motor development and motor control. The research programs in the
division are designed to address the following areas of scientific
inquiry:
- Evidence-based practice and outcomes in physical therapy and
rehabilitation
- Posture-balance-gait in older adults, young children and special
populations
- Physical activity and its role in recovery of function after
trauma
- Physical activity and its role in cognitive and physical
function in older adults
- Perceptual-motor development in young children with/without
development needs
Faculty members in the Division of Physical Therapy and Motor Control
include:
Paul F. Beattie, PhD, PT, OCS
The research interests of Dr. Beattie, a licensed physical therapist,
focus on orthopedic-related issues in physical therapy; areas of primary
interest include musculo-skeletal pain syndromes, low back, lumbar
magnetic resonance imaging, and assessment of outcomes for persons with
orthopedic problems.
Stacy Fritz, PhD, MSPT
Dr. Fritz is a licensed physical therapist whose research interests
include recovery of function following neurological insults. Areas of
primary interest include the effects of various therapeutic
interventions, including constraint-Induced movement therapy and
locomotor training, for individuals within stroke, incomplete spinal
cord injury, and for children with hemispherectomy.
Bruce A. McClenaghan, PEd, PT
Dr. McClenaghan is Director of the Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program
and a licensed physical therapist. His primary research interest is in
motor rehabilitation with a major focus on posture-balance-gait in older
adults, children and special populations. A secondary interest is in
physical activity and rehabilitation.
Jan F. Perry, EdD, PT
Dr. Perry is a license physical therapist whose special interests are in
communication, ethics, education for the clinician, and administration.
Harriet G. Williams, PhD
Dr. Williams directs the Functional Health Behaviors Assessment
Laboratories. Her research interests focus on
posture-balance-gait-mobility in children, older adults and special
populations. Other major interests are motor skill development, physical
activity, and health-related behaviors in children, physical activity
effects on cognitive and physical functioning in older adults, and
implementation of fall prevention community-based programs.
Harvey Mathews, PT, MS, OCS
Mr. Mathews is Clinical Assistant Professor and licensed physical
therapist. He has a Master’s degree in Exercise Science. Research
interests include clinical studies of physical therapy treatment,
interventions in orthopedic populations, and clinical diagnosis of
weakness.
