The Department of Exercise Science
supports several clinical/community programs, each of which
provides a unique exercise-related service. Clients are
members of the University community and other residents of
the Midlands of South Carolina. These clinical programs are
supervised by departmental faculty and are staffed by
classified employees and graduate assistants. The
department’s clinical programs are frequently used by
graduate students as sites for practicum experiences.

F.A.C.T.S.
(Functional Abilities Counseling and Testing for
Seniors) |
|
F.A.C.T.S. (Functional Abilities
Counseling and Testing for Seniors) is a program
designed to assess a broad range of functional
abilities of the elderly and to provide information
and recommendations about maintenance and promotion
of functional health and prevention of functional
declines. Selected functional abilities include:
aerobic capacity, balance, central processing, gait,
mobility, agility, hand and foot control, muscular
strength/endurance, and range of motion/flexibility. |

GOODBODIES |
|
Goodbodies is a multidimensional
educational program designed to assist children who
are experiencing weight control difficulties.
Includes nutrition education, physical activity
participation and parent involvement. |

PERCEPTUAL-MOTOR
DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY |

The
Perceptual-Motor Development Laboratory is an interdisciplinary
clinical and research program whose primary purpose
is to serve motor development/control needs of
children, the elderly, and of parents and
professionals who work with young children and aging
adults. This laboratory provides both
evaluative/diagnostic services and
therapeutic/enrichment programs for young children
and adults. It also offers special consultation
services for parents and professionals concerned
with special lifespan motor-development needs. |

PREVENTIVE EXERCISE
PROGRAM |
|
The Preventive
Exercise Program in the Clinical Exercise Research Center
provides a variety of services that address both health and
performance. These services include the Cardiovascular Risk
Factor Screening Program, the Athletic Performance Testing
Program, and Personalized Exercise Programming. These
programs are implemented by a trained staff at the Clinical
Exercise Research Center that is focused on helping
participants achieve their goals. All of these services are
available to both USC employees and members of the
community.
