The PMD lab is recognized both
nationally and internationally for its
excellence in clinical programs and
education.
- Curricular programs and degrees in the field
of lifespan motor development/control are
offered through the Arnold School of Public
Health’s Department of Exercise Science at The
University of South Carolina-Columbia.

The laboratory provides clinical
opportunities for graduate and undergraduate
students interested in working in fields related
to neuromuscular (movement) deficits in children
and older adults, as well as weight management
issues in children and teens.
Formal class work emphasizes careful
analysis and understanding of developmental
aspects of:
- Motor control across the lifespan
- Extensive training in clinical assessment of
motor performance in both children and older
adults
- Organization and implementation of programs of
perceptual-motor development and fall
prevention.
Clinical practical offer special
opportunities for students and professionals to:
- Obtain hands-on experience in interdisciplinary settings working with
- Physical and occupational therapists
- Speech therapists

- Special educators
- Child development experts
- Gerontologists
Course sequence
303 - Perceptual-Motor Development. (4)
(Prereq: EXSC 223, 224) Theoretical foundations and
clinical experience in human physical growth and motor
development.
342a - Practicum Motor Development. (2)
(Prereq: EXSC 303) Supervised practicum in a
clinical setting in motor development (1 full academic
year).
342b - Practicum Motor Development. (2)
(Prereq: EXSC 342a) 482 - Internship in Motor Development. (9)
(Prereq: EXSC 342a & 342b) Supervised practical experience in
clinical and/or field setting; involves 15 hrs/week
off-campus site and 20 hrs/week on campus at PMD Lab.
One additional class or three credit hours may be taken
with the 482 internship.
