Participants will initially meet in the
first-floor lobby of the USC Arnold School of Public Health
Research Center between 8:15 and 8:30 on Wednesday, June 11;
on Thursday, June 12, participants will meet at 8:00 am in
Room 107 of the Public Health Research Center |

The HFI workshop provides structured experiences in the
classroom and laboratory to improve your knowledge and
understanding of exercise physiology, exercise leadership,
risk factor identification, graded exercise testing,
exercise prescription, and health education, as outlined in
the American College of Sports Medicine’s Guidelines for Exercise
Testing and Prescription (7th edition). The
workshop is designed for:
- Exercise physiologists
- Personal trainers
- Health promotion specialists
- Fitness directors and instructors
- Physical educators
- Nurses
- Physical and occupational therapists
- Dieticians
The workshop is designed to provide candidates with a
thorough review of the core competencies expected of a
certification candidate. They also afford the opportunity to
practice some of the competencies found in the practical
portion of the exam. Content areas include Applied Exercise
Science, Pathophysiology, Pre-Activity Screening/Risk
Stratification, Metabolic Calculations, Human Behavior and
Counseling, Program Administration/Safety & Emergency
Procedures, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Weight Management &
Body Composition, Muscular Fitness/Flexibility Assessment,
and Exercise Programming for Special Populations. Practical
sessions, scheduled throughout the workshop, are designed to
complement the accompanying lectures and improve the
participant’s techniques on skills that were reviewed in the
lecture sessions. Ample time is set aside for individual
mastery of the presented practical skills. Involvement
depends on you. Thursday evening is also available for
additional preparation. Workshop participants will be
subjects during practical sessions; please come dressed for
skinfold and circumference measurements, strength testing,
and functional capacity tests. Appropriate dress for the
women includes ladies’ bathing suit tops or sports bras for
the skinfold testing and proper athletic shoes for everyone.
Practical partners and study partners are your choice.
If already HFI-certified, sixteen (16) Continuing
Education Credits (CECs) may be earned by attending the
workshop.

While fitness professionals are
experts in exercise/health topics, they are often less
experienced with the business and financial aspects of their
profession. Topics to be discussed at this comprehensive
one-day course include member retention, employee hiring and
recruiting, revenue streams and generation, and
organizational structures. The course material covers the
health and fitness industry from both a historical and
future trend perspective. Anyone interested in marketing
themselves or a fitness facility will benefit greatly from
attending.
