Mission

Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences is to understand how environmental exposures affect human health and disease, and how human activity affects the environment.  Due to the diversity and collegiality within the department, our faculty members are uniquely poised to study – as well as provide advanced education and training – at the intersection of environmental and human health, specifically within the areas of environmental- and public health-related microbiology, toxicology, exposure assessment, spatial analysis, and ecosystem health assessment.  A core component of our departmental mission is using basic and applied research to improve public health at both the local- and global-level.

Our department has strategic alliances and collaborations with schools, centers, and initiatives within and outside of the Arnold School of Public Health, including the School of Medicine, College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, Innovista, NanoCenter, Environmental Genomics Core Facility (Engencore), Center for Public Health Preparedness, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, and NOAA Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research.  These and other collaborations provide a strong platform for high-impact, interdisciplinary public health-related research, as well as enhanced education and training for our graduate students.
