Faculty of the Physical Therapy Program and the Department of
Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina have combined
to jointly offer students who have graduated from the University of
South Carolina DPT program with a unique opportunity to complete a
research-based PhD in Exercise Science with a specialization in
Motor Control/Motor Rehabilitation, Health Aspects of Physical
Activity or Applied Physiology.
The Post DPT - PhD Option is designed to provide an accelerated
educational avenue for the physical therapist who wants to pursue a
career in the academic environment and conduct research in the area
of motor control, health aspects of physical activity or applied
physiology. Graduates of this degree will be prepared to fulfill the
current demand for physical therapists to conduct clinically-based
research and teach at the university level.
All regulations governing the PhD degree (both Graduate School
and Department of Exercise Science) will govern this degree. Only
students recently graduated (within three years) of the DPT
degree at the University of South Carolina are eligible for
admission for this degree option. Students may apply for admission
to the post DPT- PhD option in the third year of enrollment in
the DPT program of study or within 3 years of graduation.
Applicants to the dual degree must meet the entry
requirements of the PhD in Exercise Science, be approved for
admission by the faculty of the specific division of the Department
of Exercise Science (motor behavior/rehabilitation, applied
physiology or health aspects of physical activity) and be approved
into the PhD degree by the core faculty of the DPT program.
Admission to the post DPT- PhD under these guidelines requires that
the applicant be a licensed physical therapist at the time of
enrollment in the post DPT- PhD Option.
Students who have completed the DPT degree and admitted to the
program are required to complete a minimum of 30 additional
credit hours of instruction. This additional course work
includes 12 credit hours of dissertation. A program of study will be
developed for each student following existing regulations of the PhD
in Exercise Science.
