BIOMECHANICS OF COUGH AND THROAT CLEARING
Our laboratory has received an R03 grant to use high-speed videoendoscopy technology to assess the impact of harmful clearing. This work will add to both basic science of larngeal biomechanics and clinical protocols to decrease tissue damage.

MECHANISM OF THE EFFECT OF SYSTEMIC HYDRATION ON LARYNGEAL MUCUS
The effect of systemic hydration on laryngeal mucus is addressed via studies of 1) visual judgments of mucus aggregation and 2) blood and urine testing of systemic hydration as related to laryngeal pathology.

VISUAL-PERCEPTUAL ANALYSIS OF LARYNGEAL RECORDINGS

This laboratory has studied visual judgments of stroboscopy, high-speed videoendoscopy, and digital kymography to determine normative data for these visualization techniques. We have also conducted studies to assess scaling of vocal fold vibratory features to promote inter-and intra-rater reliability. Our lab also studies the influence of recording techniques such as endoscope type and patient instructions on clinician’s judgments. This work is funded by an R01 from NIH NIDCD received by PI Dimitar Deliyski.

TREATMENT EFFICACY OF VOICE DISORDERS
We have several studies of treatment efficacy that are on-going.
  1. Utilizing laryngeal recordings to determine efficacy of ameliorative clearing behaviors

  2. Treatment paradigms for persons with Spasmodic Dysphonia

  3. Treatment prognosis using acoustic analysis
