COMD Participates in ASHA’s
Minority Student Leadership Program
Each year, the
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association selects a small number of
students pursuing careers in speech-language pathology, to become
a part of its Minority Leadership Program. The purpose of the program is to
“provide focused educational programming and activities to build and enhance
leadership skills” and “give participants the opportunity to interact with
leaders in the professions of audiology, speech-language pathology, and
speech, language, and hearing sciences.” Participants have their expenses
paid to attend ASHA’s annual convention in November, during which time they
attend special meetings with ASHA officers, visit one of the ASHA’s
Legislative Council sessions, and get connected with other future leaders in
the profession. Only 20 students are chosen by ASHA to
participate in this annual program. We have been fortunate enough to have
students represent the University of South Carolina each year.
