2008 Arnold School Awards
The Arnold School of Public Health invites you to submit
nominations of the awards listed below. Awardees will be
notified of award decisions at Hooding 2008.
Student Awards
Jeffrey Keith Mattison Outstanding Student Achievement Award
This award was established in 1989 by the Student Public Health
Association (now the Dean’s Student Advisory Council), in honor
of former student Jeffrey Mattison. The award is a tribute to
Jeffrey’s life, his initiative, and his motivation for work in
public health. The recipient must possess a combination of
service, leadership, and personal initiative. The award winner
must demonstrate the ability to use these skills toward the
resolution of public health problems.

Doctoral Student Achievement Award
Established in 1993, this award is presented to an outstanding
doctoral candidate who is selected on the basis of academic
performance and potential for further contributions to the field
of public health.

Alumni Awards
Norman J. Arnold Alumni Medal
The prestigious Arnold medal is the highest honor bestowed on an
alumnus. It is given to an alumnus who has been working in the
field of public health for 10 years or more, has had a major
positive impact on the profession and on the health of an
identified community or population and, as a result, has brought
recognition to the Arnold School.

Gerry Sue Arnold Alumni Award
This award is presented to an alumni who graduated less than 10
years prior to receipt of the award and whose work has made a
difference to the profession and in the health of an identified
community or population.

This award was established in 2000 and recognizes outstanding
alumni who have made significant contributions to the public
health profession at a community, state, national, or

Faculty Awards
James A. Keith Excellence in Teaching Award
Established in 1991, this award recognizes a faculty member for
excellence in teaching in the Arnold School of Public Health.
Nominations for the award come from current students, faculty,
or alumni. The award recognizes genuine enthusiasm for the
subject matter and true concern for students’ progress.

This award was established in 1990 and recognizes a faculty
member for outstanding contributions to research in
health-related issues.
