Team-Based Training Institute

The University of South Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness' (USC-CPHP) team-based training strategies are the basis of its unique systems change strategy. By providing linkages between academic and practice partners, the Center strengthens the preparedness capacity of the public health workforce, and of local communities where team members work and serve. Team-based training provides critical networking and collaboration opportunities, performs comprehensive evaluation of projects based on the Center’s logic model, and shares/disseminates Center products to reach target audiences.

TBTI Initiatives

The Team-Based Training Institute draws together groups that represent state, regional or local constituencies to tackle problems that require a think-tank approach. The TBTI is evaluated through comprehensive process and outcome evaluations, and is enhanced using continuous quality improvement and lessons learned. The accomplishments of the teams that attend TBTI training attest to the quality of our evaluation philosophy and the outcomes it brings.

TBTI Teams' Success Stories

  1. Two teams from SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), a state-level team and a Region 7 team, attended the 2008 TBTI to develop fatality management plans which will help localities coordinate responses across the state's regions during disasters.

  2. In 2007 a DHEC Region 4 team began developing a plan to implement Behavioral Health Teams in each of ten counties. In 2008, the team returned to refine their plan into a model that can be shared with others regions across the state.
  3. In 2008 a DHEC Central Office team developed and implemented a protocol for a unified, coordinated response to reported environmental and community health/emergency issues for use across the entire DHEC agency. Their team represented both "sides" of the agency (health services department and environmental quality control department).
  4. An interdisciplinary team of scientists is developing an Environmental Surveillance Network for Coastal South Carolina which will provide a front-line, real-time observational framework to identify adverse environmental responses to unusual events. Team members represent NOAA, Clemson University Livestock & Poultry Health, South Carolina Emergency Management Division, US Geological Survey, the Department of Natural Resources, DHEC and other agencies.
