Dietetic Association honors USC’s Russ Pate
Arnold School professor presented with honorary membership by ADA, one of the highest honors the group can present to a non-member.

US Government Releases First Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
The US Department of Health and Human Services announced the inaugural release of the  Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Russell Pate, CPARG PI, was part of the thirteen-member Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee which developed the Guidelines.

Directly Observed Physical Activity Levels in Preschool Children
CPARG investigators recently published an article in the Journal of School Health based on the results of a study which indicates that young children are sedentary during 80% of their time in preschool and are moderately to vigorously active only 3% of the time.  This study confirms and extends previous work by this group, which indicates that children spend a majority of their time in preschool engaged in sedentary activities.

Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (FIT Kids)
Russell Pate was one of seven witnesses invited to testify before the House Education and Labor Committee in Washington DC during its deliberations on the Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids Act (FIT Kids). The measure would encourage schools to work towards a national goal of 150 minutes of PE per week for elementary school students and 225 minutes per week for students in middle and high schools.

Pate Receives 2008 Science Honor Award
Russell R. Pate is the recipient of the 2008 Science Honor Award presented by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The award honors Dr. Pate's significant contributions and commitment to the health and wellness of the nation.

Promoting Physical Activity in Middle School Girls (PDF)
Russell Pate co-author's an article published in the March issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine based on results from the Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls (TAAG), a multiple site, community-based study supported by NHLBI of the National Institutes of Health.

Physical Activity Guidelines
The Department of Health & Human Services has selected Russ Pate of the Arnold School to serve on an advisory committee that will make recommendations pertaining to the development of the first federal guidelines to focus on physical activity.

Physical Activity Interventions in Children and Adolescents is a recent book written by CPARG and addresses the problem of the growing obesity in children by helping professionals in schools, health departments, recreation centers, state agencies, and not-for-profit organizations design, implement, and evaluate interventions to promote and increase physical activity among children and adolescents.
