The Arnold School of Public Health recognized exceptional achievements by students, faculty and alumni during its 2008 Hooding Ceremony on May 8 at the Koger Center for the Arts.

Dr. Felipe Lobelo of the Department of Exercise Science was selected for the Doctoral Achievement Award.

Dr. Lobelo, is a native of Colombia, where he earned a medical degree in 2002 and did advanced studies in epidemiology from 2002-2004 at the Universidad Del Rosario Medical School in Bogota. Lobelo, who has been researching health implications of physical activity in youth, is a candidate for a doctorate in exercise science. His nomination notes his success in obtaining research grants from the American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Promoting Physical Activity in Middle School Girls (PDF)
Russell Pate co-author's an article published in the March issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine based on results from the Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls (TAAG), a multiple site, community-based study supported by NHLBI of the National Institutes of Health.

Physical Activity Guidelines
The Department of Health & Human Services has selected Russ Pate of the Arnold School to serve on an advisory committee that will make recommendations pertaining to the development of the first federal guidelines to focus on physical activity.

Physical Activity Interventions in Children and Adolescents is a recent book written by CPARG and addresses the problem of the growing obesity in children by helping professionals in schools, health departments, recreation centers, state agencies, and not-for-profit organizations design, implement, and evaluate interventions to promote and increase physical activity among children and adolescents.
