|
|
What are the environmental
health sciences?
The environmental health sciences examine the interactions
between humans and their environment. The Department focuses on the adverse effects
of environmental contamination on human health and the unfavorable impacts of
human activities on the environment. Human activities impact environmental quality,
and environmental factors, which in turn, are principal determinants of human
health. To explore these complex interactions, numerous elements of the pure
and applied sciences, including biology, chemistry, engineering, and medicine
are required. Students in the Department learn how to apply the relevant
aspects of these disciplines to solve environmental health problems.

What is industrial hygiene?
Industrial hygiene is the area of public health concerned with
the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards. A
practicing industrial hygienist must be prepared to deal with problems in the
many areas related to worker protection, including exposure to volatile chemicals,
indoor air pollution, excess noise, asbestos contamination, heavy metal toxicity,
ventilation design and ergonomics. Governmental requirements for employers
to provide a safe working environment and the recognition that industrial hygiene
skills are important in other applications have created a strong demand for our
graduates.
