The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders embarked upon a major research initiative in the year 2000, which has resulted in a dramatic increase in research productivity. Extramural funding has increased by more than an order of magnitude in recent years, as has faculty publication. The Department is now home to some of the finest scholars and scientists in their respective fields.

The research interests in the Department are quite varied, and include all facets of the communication sciences. Some laboratories make full use of the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging, in which a Siemens 3T MRI scanner is housed. Others employ behavioral methods and either adult or child participants.

Below is a listing of the active laboratories and links where available to each.

ADULT NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS LABORATORY

(Dr. E.M. Frank)

Work in the Adult Neurological Disorders Laboratory is directed toward a better understanding of the neural limitations resulting from Huntington’s Disease and the relationship between these limitations and language impairment.

APHASIA LABORATORY
(Dr. J. Fridriksson)

Work in the Aphasia Laboratory seeks to clarify the relationships between brain damage resulting from stroke and language impairment. Both advanced neuroimaging and behavioral techniques are employed.

CHILD LANGUAGE RESEARCH GROUP
(Drs. H. McDade and A. Montgomery)

Research by the Child Language Research Group focuses on the identification of early predictors of language impairment in young children and the later academic consequences of such delays.

NEUROIMAGING LABORATORY
(Dr. C. Rorden)

Work in the Neuroimaging Laboratory involves advanced neuroimaging techniques to clarify brain-behavior relationships.

Neuroimaging Laboratory
SPEECH READING LABORATORY
(Dr. A. Montgomery)

Experiments in this laboratory are aimed at clarifying the nature of speech perception and the integration of visual and auditory information in this process.

VOICE DISORDERS LABORATORY
(Dr. H. Bonilha)

Work in the Voice Disorders Laboratory seeks to elucidate disorders of the speaking voice.

VOICE & SPEECH LABORATORY
