.: Welcome to the USC BSL Homepage

The USC Brain Stimulation Laboratory was founded in 2010 by Drs Roger D. Newman-Norlund, Julius Fridriksson and Dirk den Ouden, with additional contributions from the Departments of Exercise Science and Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Housed in the Discovery I Building (left) in Columbia SC, the USC Brain Stimulation Laboratory provides researchers in all departments with the ability to non-invasively stimulate the human brain.

.: Message from the Director

This is an exciting time in the history of brain research. After years of using neuroimaging methods like PET, MRI and fNIS to examine the inner workings of the brain, we are finally at a stage where we are able to precisely target neural tissure for stimulation. This can lead to better learning (in the case of motor skill and language acquisition in both healthy and patient populations. The potential of brain stimulation approaches to help children with developmental disabilities, victims of chronic stroke, and even expert sportsmen is just beginning to be explored. We are proud to house the first brain stimulation laboratory in Columbia, and we look forward to exploring the potential of this approach to advance our understanding of brain plasticity and it's role in learning.
